10 things your baby will need

Certainly! When preparing for a newborn baby at this time of year, it can be a bit overwhelming. So here are 10 essential items you may want to consider:

  1. Cot or Moses Basket: A safe and comfortable sleeping space for your baby. This must have a flat surface without bumpers or extra linens. Make sure it has a brand new mattress and meets current safety standards.

  2. Baby Clothes: Stock up on babygrows, bodysuits, socks, and hats. Aim for soft, breathable fabrics like cotton.

  3. Nappies and Wipes: Newborns go through a lot of nappies, so having a good supply is essential. Consider whether you prefer disposable or cloth nappies. Disposable baby wipes are great for clearing up baby. Did you know that you can get reusable wipes?

  4. Baby Bath and Toiletries? A baby bath, can be a useful addition, or you may just want to use your bathroom sink. Baby-friendly soap, shampoo, and lotions are available, but its better for your baby’s skin to just use warm water in the first few weeks.

  5. Feeding Kit: If you're breastfeeding, you might need nipple cream and nursing bras. For formula feeding, you'll need bottles, formula, and sterilising equipment.

  6. Pram/Pushchair/sling: A reliable and safe mode of transportation for your baby. Ensure it is suitable for newborns and complies with safety standards. A sling will work best initially.

  7. Car Seat: A rear-facing car seat is a legal requirement for transporting your baby in a car. Make sure it is properly installed using the manufacturers instructions. The shop where you purchase this may have staff to help with this.

  8. Changing Table and Changing Mat: You might want to consider a changing table for your changing mat, leaning over baby regularly though out the day will put a strain on your back. They are a nice to have but not essential.

  9. Baby Monitor: Keep an eye on your baby while they sleep with a reliable baby monitor. There are various types, including audio-only and video monitors. Again a nice to have, but not essential. You baby will be with you in the same room initially anyway.

  10. Blankets: A few soft and breathable blankets will be great for keeping your baby warm and comfortable. Thinner covers can be used as swaddles.

Remember that safety and comfort are top priorities when choosing baby items.

The newborn has only three demands. They are warmth in the arms of its mother, food from her breasts, and security in the knowledge of her presence. Breastfeeding satisfies all three.” Grantly Dick-Read
